Stimulator Comparison Table

Check out our TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) database below. Many chronic pain conditions can be alleviated by the use of a TENS device.Stimulator Comparison Table

A TENS unit delivers low-voltage electric stimulation pulses that interrupt the transmission of pain signals.

What you need to know about TENS devices

What is transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation describes the use of electrical currents provided by a TENS unit to therapeutically stimulate the nerves. Usually, tens units are connected to the skin through electrode patches. They are generally battery operated. These devices have been implicated in treating a variety of different diseases and disorders, though there is some controversy concerning their efficacy.

The most likely reason for this controversy is that the experience of pain is so subjective, and there’s so many different conditions that afflict the human population, that there could never be a consistent experience demonstrated across the population.

What are the risks and benefits?

That said, since these devices are relatively inexpensive and can potentially alleviate symptoms of pain, it may be worth trying one of the stimulators. If you purchase it from Amazon and you use it and find that it is not beneficial to you, you will be able to return it.

In this way, you can be assured that you will not have wasted any money while also providing yourself a chance to experience some pain relief from whatever chronic condition you are suffering from.

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation is a passive therapy methodology and exercise. It’s an efficient way to treat your condition without the added aggravation of having to move around or do something that could potentially further aggravate your symptoms.

How do they work?

TENS units have dual channels which let you switch between different modes very easily, they also have intensity levels that are adjustable allowing you to completely customize your treatment experience. Many users describe the sensation as feeling like ‘tingling’.

TENS devices can be especially effective for chronic pain conditions precisely because many of the chronic pain conditions are caused by nerves and damaged tissue around them. The TENS unit will stimulate the nerves endings. The effect of this on your particular condition cannot be predicted ahead of time, but there is a chance that it can be an effective way of blocking pain signals.

In essence, the electrical stimulation prevents pain signals from accessing your brain.

These devices do work very quickly, although it is likely that you’ll have to adjust and modify your own unit to find the best level and type of stimulation for you.

What conditions is TENs used for?

Tens units are implicated in the treatment and pain management of a variety of conditions including:

  • phantom-limb pain,
  • cancer pain,
  • nerve pain,
  • back pain,
  • sciatica
  • disc problems,
  • failed back surgery,
  • disc degeneration,
  • chronic regional pain syndrome,
  • diabetes,
  • and many more.
TENS units are also great for treating muscle soreness from inflammatory conditions as well as rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.

Often times, tens units are used in conjunction with relaxation therapy, guided imagery, exercise, massage therapy, nerve blocking injections, spinal manipulation, and biofeedback.

Final Thoughts

All of that said, it may be worth taking a look at purchasing one of these devices as the risk/reward ratio is certainly in your favor.
